AUTUMN ARTWALK | Saturday, October 15th, 2011
RECEPTION 3 – 7 pm

Newburyport’s final ArtWalk of 2011 drew record crowds to the gallery. Saturday proved a spectacular fall day with bright skies and cool temperatures. A brilliant and celebratory evening unfolded on the heels of a passing shower.

The gallery walls resonated with marvelous new work! We welcome to our roster of award-winning artists contemporary painter Whitney Heavey, equine artist C. Tanner Jensen, landscape painter Robert Watkins, photographer Dennis Skillman and glass artist John Soward.

The exhibit runs through Sunday, November 6, 2011.

A native of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, Patricia Gordon acquired a respect for her natural surroundings at an early age. She received her B.A. degree in Fine Arts from the College of William and Mary where she majored in art history. Residing now in New Hampshire, Patricia draws inspiration from the beauty around her. Her landscapes are characterized by a soft, ethereal quality, reflecting the peaceful essence of the areas she chooses to represent.

“In my work, there is an expression of the tranquility and timeless appeal sensed in the landscape around me. Inspired by the visions of tonalist painters, both contemporary and historical, I follow an intuitive process to move beyond the physical manifestation of reality and portray the emotion that naturally emanates from the rural landscape for me. The resulting painting is a journey into a deeper exploration of the spiritual connection I feel for my environment, where even the simplest of scenes becomes imbued with poetry and grace.” P.S. Dana Levin received a BFA in painting and drawing from the acclaimed School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Subsequent study took place in Italy at the rigorous Florence Academy of Art, where she trained in the painting and drawing techniques of the Old Masters. After teaching at the academy for several years, Dana returned to the United States and opened The New School of Classical Art, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It was closed in 2008 so she could devote herself full-time to painting.

Dana has received awards and honors from prestigious national and international juried shows and museums. She has been profiled in many prominent publications, including Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, International Artist Magazine, American Art Collector & Artist’s Magazine. She is also included in important museum collections, as well as in private and corporate collections nationwide.

Grace Cooper received her formal art education at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1985. Before dedicating herself to painting full time, Grace was a textile designer for printed fabric working in both the apparel and home furnishing fields. That experience proved to be invaluable in developing her technical skills and use of color.

“My work is inspired by nature and the varying aspects of light, color and atmosphere. Painting in my studio, I use photos and sketches primarily as a starting point. Here the process takes on a life of its own, revealing an emotion more than a literal interpretation of a scene. By layering thin veils of paint onto the canvas, the work is given a soft, diffused and ethereal quality. I’m drawn to compositions that are minimalist in design, which for me evoke a sense of peace and serenity, something I feel we all yearn for at times.”

Living and working in New London, New Hampshire, Grace’s paintings are held in many private collections, represented in numerous galleries, and displayed widely in juried shows and exhibitions.

The Weekend Haul Out, watercolor, 15" x 22"

A self-taught artist, Steven Lushbegan painting in watercolor in 1992. Having spent 5 years as an engineer in the Merchant Marine, Steven was naturally drawn to maritime subjects. His paintings are the result of exhaustive research on specific ship construction details, port history and sea and sky conditions. After carefully drafting his subject, Steven applies a series of watercolor washes using a painterly technique combined with strategic placement of detail. “I love strong colors and strive to capture a sense of emotion, understated activity and contrasting light in my work.”

Steven’s work has been exhibited extensively nationwide, including at the Museum of America & the Sea, Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT., Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, ME., Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, MO., Herreshoff Marine Museum, Bristol, RI., National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, Gloucester, MA., Biggs Museum of American Art, Dover, DE., and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Buzzards Bay, MA.

Steven is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and the New England Watercolor Society, as well as an Artist Member of the Rockport Art Association and the Northshore Arts Association.

The mystical cityscapes and sensual figurative works of Nella Lush are imbued with an Old World character. Reminiscent of ancient frescoes, these works invite the viewer into the very private world of its subjects. A sense of mystery & allure contribute to a timeless quality.

An intuitive painter, Nella was born, raised and educated in Italy. Now a New Englander, Nella’s artistic reference lies undeniably in her European roots. Working primarily with oil, Nella uses a process of layering & scraping, finished with a final cold wax application, to achieve the distinctive rich and aged look of her canvases.

Nella is an artist member of the National Association of Women Artists -NYC, Allied Artists of America, NY, NY, Rockport Art Association, North Shore Art Association, Cambridge Art Association and President of Andover’s Artist Guild.

Her work hangs in private and corporate collections throughout the United States, Canada, Italy, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.
